A Heritage Railway Workshop, Repurposed

Moelis Australia Hotel Management (MAHM) is the fund manager of Sydney’s Redcape Hotel Group, an unlisted investment fund focusing on high-quality Australian hotels and alternative-use real estate assets.

MAHM engaged us to manage the relocation of its Cremorne head office to premises located on the site of the former Eveleigh Railway Workshops, near Redfern Train Station. 

For over a century, the target site was the Workshops’ works managers’ and timekeepers’ office, and is listed on the NSW State Heritage Register.

Our role: to manage the conversion of a ‘warm shell’ building into a modern office space.

The Challenges

Given its historical status, the works managers’ office required a heritage-sensitive approach to fit-out.

We also needed to coordinate reuse opportunities for the building’s existing furniture, fixtures and equipment.

The Solutions

The building’s heritage-listed status meant we were limited in the changes that could be made, so we adopted a low-touch approach that focused on enhancing the existing space, not changing it.

The Outcomes

The revitalised works managers’ office is a study in adaptive reuse:

A heritage building given new life in a way that preserves its unique character.

As part of the transformation, we delivered a new entry foyer, open-plan workspaces, casual ‘breakout’ work areas, diversely configured meeting rooms, and end-of-trip facilities, all populated with a mix of new and repurposed furniture.

Now, MAHM has an office space that matches its growing workforce – and the Eveleigh Railway Workshops have retained a key historical building.
