Wally's Walk Basement Refurbishment

The refurbishment of E5A Basement was the final step in the holistic upgrade of building E5A following refurbishment of the remainder of the building across several capital projects completed between 2011 and 2016.

The works required the refurbishment of the remaining portions of Level 0 to cater for the current and future faculty needs. The refurbished interior spaces were to be reallocated as wet lab spaces and associated specialist rooms for earth and planetary sciences and environmental science research, as well as other lab activities, as required by faculty.

Empire were engaged to provide project management services across planning, design, construction and handover phases.

The Challenges

The key challenges for the project team and contractors involved working in and around operational lab spaces which included complex mechanical systems, fume cupboards, dust and fume extraction, lab gases and dangerous goods storage.

The Solutions

Empire’s comprehensive OH&S and Health and Safety Management systems ensured strict compliance to all safety requirements by all contractors.

The Outcomes

Fully refurbished wet lab spaces and associated specialist rooms were delivered successfully.
