Refreshing an iconic byron bay venue

The Beach Hotel in Byron Bay is an iconic venue in the Northern Rivers regions of New South Wales. It is known far and wide as ‘that pub at the top of the hill’ and has been the crown jewel of Bay Street for more than a quarter century. It is owned and managed by Moelis Australia Hotel Management (MAHM) Group. The hotel is cherished by the local community and appreciated not only for its food and drinks, but also for the entertainment and stage acts on offer.

Empire Project Management has been engaged to drive the project throughout design and construction phase. The Early Contractor Involvement (ECI) model was adopted here which allowed the contractor to assess the ‘buildability’ of the design and provide accurate construction costs in parallel with the initial concepts. The works delivered in 2022 included a complete refresh of the bars, pub amenities, new ‘shack’ function room with associated kitchen and raw bar, new grassed area, new pool area and landscaping, new resort reception and upgraded resort rooms.

The Challenges

One challenge during the project was the programming of works to minimise disruption to the venue operations as the entire venue stayed open and operational throughout the entire project. Another challenge was procurement of refrigeration as the expected lead times did not reach the project deadline.

The Solutions

Due to our extensive experience in hospitality projects, we were able to strategically and successfully program the works to avoid impact on venue operations. To overcome the challenges with fridge procurement due to extended lead in times, we were able to secure rental fridges.

The Outcomes

The works were completed on time and under budget. The kitchen and bar can operate more efficiently which has resulted in a positive impact on sales and customer experience.
